Dear ARIN Members:
As many of you know, I am running for the ARIN Board of Trustees. I enjoyed the many conversations I had with members attending ARIN 54 and NANOG 92 in Toronto. For those of you that were not able to make those meetings here is a few data points I would like to provide about me.
My candidate profile can be found at
https://arin-elections.net/elections/board-of-trustees/brown-john/
1. To address the “Qualifications not Confirmed” status on the candidate form. The outside party that ARIN hired to perform background checks required me to submit digital images of my passport, drivers license, documents supporting my home address and other sensitive personal identifying information. As part of that I was required to legally agree to have that data SENT and STORED on computers outside of the ARIN region and for such data to be accessed by parties outside of the ARIN region. Specifically ARIN’s vendor wanted to have my data sent to people in high risk countries located in the Far East. Their vendor said the data was safe, but when I mentioned a photo of a screen could be taken by a cell phone, there was that long silence of “oh yeah…..”. This was not acceptable to me and presents a great risk to both myself and to ARIN. I declined to put myself at that risk.
Far too many times we just agree to share data. As someone in cyber security, I am always challenging these kinds of “shrink wrap” agreements that can easily lead to abuse. As an ARIN Board Member, I will work hard to keep a detailed and weather eye on how we protect ARIN and ARIN member data.
2. ARIN has a critical role to the continued success of the Internet, both in region and globally. With over 35 years of experience using, designing building, running, internet networks I believe I have the technical skills to help assure ARIN continues in this role.
3. I also bring direct experience in writing legislation, testifying before policy makers (globally) (US Congress, FCC). Thus I have worked on policy matters including building consensus between different parties.
4. For more than 30 years I have operated multiple businesses. Many of those have been successful, some not. These experiences have provided me with a solid understanding of the financial aspects of operating an org.
5. Probably the most important bit is that I understand the separations between the Board, Staff, Advisory Council and Members. I take the “Duty of Care”, “Fiscal Duties to ARIN” very serious.
In closing, please reach out if you have any questions. I’m happy to answer them.
No matter what, please make sure you / your org Votes.
I do ask that you cast a vote for me, John Brown.
Thank you
John Brown, CISSP, CFI,CFII,MEI
