Subject: Re: [arin-ppml] Draft Policy ARIN-2024-1: Definition of Organization ID/Org ID
Thus spake ARIN (info at arin.net) on Wed, Oct 30, 2024 at 12:48:53PM -0400:
> Proposed:
>
> Section 2.18. Organization Identifier (Org ID)
>
> An Organizational Identifier (Org ID) is an identifier assigned to resource holders in the ARIN registry.

> This definition had previously been included in an earlier policy proposal (ARIN-2023-7), but community feedback recommendations on that proposal showed a preference for adding the definition separately from that proposal. As such the definition is now being proposed as a standalone proposal, and the language will be removed from the current ARIN-2023-7 proposal, allowing the two sections of that proposal to be evaluated separately.

With that wording, I would read that as "once you hold a resource, you
are then assigned an Org ID".
Is that actually the case or are Org ID's
assigned before resources are?
(JS) OrgIDs are assigned to an organization wishing to request and received Internet Number Resources (INR)s from ARIN.
I would want to be careful about the
policy potentially creating a race condition such as for new requestors.
(JS) This would not happen as OrgIDs are explicitly detailed here:
https://www.arin.net/resources/guide/account/records/org/
The description on that webpage “An Organization ID (Org ID) represents a business, nonprofit corporation, or government entity in the ARIN database.” would work as well.
Likewise, do all Org ID's have resources, or are there Org ID's that do
not?
(JS) There are OrgIDs that do not have resources at times due to several reasons. Examples would be waiting for their first request to be approved, transferring all resources to another OrgID, and returning all resources to ARIN.
Are these records purged once the resources are no longer held?
Yes, Orphaned OrgIDs, as well as Orphaned POCs, are deleted two years after being identified as no longer holding INRs. For mor information see:
