You know, ARIN was first chartered to help further the Internet.
Why is it that many here want ARIN to do the opposite?
Because you're mistaken. That's ISOC's charter.
For clarity -
ARIN was specifically formed to perform the IP addressing functions which were being
done prior to that time under the InterNIC cooperative agreement. ARIN’s Articles of
Incorporation <https://www.arin.net/about_us/corp_docs/artic_incorp.html#official_html>
are extremely broad (as is typical of not-for-profit organizations) and include purposes
which could be easily read as "furthering the Internet”.
At the time of ARIN’s formation, there were two existing Regional Internet Registries
(RIPE NCC, and APNIC), and ARIN’s effectively became the third RIR with its region
being “Rest of World”. The reason for regional registries was not intended for policy
purposes, but for administrative convenience for those requesting resources (such as
local hours and language support)
