You have not established that the community interpreted the policy, or "the
right thing to do", as you are attempting to assert here and with the
proposed policy change. Given the pushback, it is evident that the exact
opposite is true. Most people seem to want more explanation of why the
existing situation is in fact a problem, or disagree with your assertion
that it is.
You don't have to convince you; you have to convince US.
