Hi Chris,

"Fair doesn't mean that everyone gets the same thing, fair means that
everyone gets what they need." That's cute but fairness and need bear
no relationship with each other whatsoever. Fairness is about neither
need nor equality. It's about merit and inclusion.

Consider the spendthrift and the miser. The spendthrift needs a half
million dollar house to hold all his stuff while the miser fits fine
into a studio apartment. The miser has saved his money. He can afford
a half million dollar house. The spendthrift can afford a studio
apartment. Who lives where? What's need? What's fair?

Does your well documented high consumption of addresses truly mean you
deserve more? 2013-4 says unequivocally yes. Documented need is a
bedrock principle.


A statement of principles is about exclusion. We seek to set
boundaries for discussion and activity. That's the opposite of fair.
But if we don't set those boundaries, we'll waste effort repeatedly
reconsidering known-to-be-meritless ideas. Which is also the opposite
of fair.

To achieve fairness, we seek a statement of principles whose elements
are meritorious beyond doubt. That's a high bar to meet and IMO most
of what's in 2013-4 doesn't meet it.
