This seems like an optimistic view of the patching / update cycle.

I agree.  Nor do the web servers, load balancers, firewalls, etc.  I certainly didn't exclude these from the problem's scope.

I agree.

But, a key difference is that both the source and destination need to support IPv6 before it becomes useful.  The presence of completely different behaviors on each end of a formerly-reserved unicast flow might be more disruptive than the migration to a dual-stack environment.

Thus my suggestion, that it is a good idea to limit the scope i.e. to a Loc/ID backbone environment.
