I did a Gantt chart of ASN "life cycles" a while back. As of 1 May 
2003, about 1628 of the (2,958 total) ASNs that were routed in late 
1997 continued to be consistently present in the routing table, with 
"consistent" meaning visible in Route Views or NLANR data on the first 
of every month in between. Another 188 or so were intermittently 
visible, but apparently still around.

Will post the picture (sadly not so pretty as Aussie output) in
