Search Engines/IP restrictions/policy changes

Most ISP's at this point use dynamically assigned IP addressing... each IP
address (just like a modem port) being used by the maximum the ISP can get
away with ( 10 customers per modem port is a workable standard)

That was one of the first "changes" ARIN made to how other people do
business. It created issues for some ISP's, but they either adapted... or
they were history.

As for the policy on IP addresses and Virtual Web hosting ... it did not
come out of the blue.

Most people I know saw it coming for about a year. It just went from
"strongly advised against" to "against policy".

I do agree that it would have been nice if ARIN had worked with the Search
Engine folks (Yahoo/Google/Lycos/Hotbot/Etc) to be ready for this change in
policy.

Any ARIN folks want to comment?

Adaptation? Has anybody considered having ISPs proxy all their dialup
customers? That represents significant IP usage.

Web hosts are not the only type of organization which requires large
numbers of IPs.

FWIW, overall, I do support ARIN's IP restrictions, but I do not support
their instantaneous implementation of such policies. Such changes to take
time, and it seems that time is not something which was taken into account
with this policy.
