Paraphrasing from what I said to a friend a few minutes ago.
The NSI/IANA/ARIN probably have the power to just do the damn thing and
public opinion be damned. Yet Kim et al. are busting their buns for
little but flamage (most religious or clueless and hence useless) to get
public input, think about what people want and how that plays off against
the realities of running a registry (about which they do have some small
experience), and try to create the best possible solution for the internet
in which we all live.
It would help everybody, and make a better end result for the internet, if
we kind of assumed that the people busting their buns trying to get this
out of the old NSF/NSI cradle have good intent and are somewhat competent.
