From william at elan.net Mon Feb 23 04:56:46 2004 From: william at elan.net (william(at)elan.net) Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 01:56:46 -0800 (PST) Subject: [dbwg] RE: referals not working (fwd) Message-ID: The message below is forward from rwhois mail list. As can be seen from it, there is currently a problem in that rwhois direct referrals are not corresponding to new ARIN whois "ReferralServer:" field in port43 whois. As I understood that, it was agreed that after ReferralServer field is introduced, this database field could be used to fix root rwhois. However it appears ARIN may have decided to keep these still as separately maintained databases, in particular I note a recently updated rwhois referral template at http://www.rwhois.net/ftp/rwhois-template.txt I don't think this is a good idea, I think synchronization between the port43 whois and port 4321 rwhois is what everybody wants and expects. So it would be best if arin generates all root rwhois referalls out of ReferralServer field in its main whois (just like it generates rwhois database other fields out of normal whois database) and that there be no separate template to request root rwhois referrals to work. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 08:58:36 +0200 From: Thomas Kinghorn To: "'rwhois at jeffchan.com'" Cc: "'Rwhois (E-mail)'" Subject: RE: referals not working Hi Jeff. When clicking the link supplied, you get Referral rwhois://rwhois.citec.net:4321/auth-area=209.212.96.0/19 But If you look at ARIN, ReferralServer: rwhois://rwhois.mtnns.net:4321 The latter is correct. The first is an obsolete server from +/- 2 years ago. Thanks for the prompt response. Perhaps the issue is with your local client. As you replied to the poster, he should contact hostmaster at arin.net to get the existing rwhois referral updated. We do monitor that list and reply (on-list and off-list) when needed. > As I understood that, it was agreed that after ReferralServer > field is introduced, this database field could be used to fix root > rwhois. We agree and fully intend to do this. The effort will include the cleanup and conversion of existing rwhois referrals. We have been holding off on starting this project pending the final resolution of Policy Proposal 2003-5, Distributed Information Server Use Requirements. If this policy is adopted, it will impact the nature and scope of the cleanup effort. Thank you for raising this issue. Be assured that it is still on our radar, and we will address it in due course.
