The 500 error may be received if the applied APIKEY does not have Bulk Whois access enabled. ARIN requires an Bulk Whois AUP to be signed before an APIKEY can be used to access Bulk Whois.

We have in our issue tracker an issue to change the 500 to a more appropriate error for this type of error.
