This suggestion will remain open until implementation is complete. ARIN Comment 01 July 2014 Thank you again for submitting your suggestion to add a 'whois' entry for IPv6 Unique Local Addresses fc00::/7. We are writing to inform you this action has been taken. When you query for an address inside that range you will now see a corresponding whois entry. Note that we currently have a size limitation of /12 for IPv6 netblocks in whois, so the entry appears as 32 separate /12 records, however the entire /7 range is covered by an entry. We will be updating whois to allow IPv6 netblocks larger than /12 in the near future and the /7 will then appear as a single entry. This suggestion is now closed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The suggestion and response text are provided below. This suggestion remains open and is available at: https://www.arin.net/participate/acsp/suggestions/2014-11.html Regards, Communications and Member Services American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) **** Suggestion: * The netmod template reverts to manual processing by hostmaster when the prefix length matches the allocation. For example, ARIN allocates a /18 and you have swip'd out the entire /18. It seems the automation doesn't understand which record to remove (the parent or the subdelegation) Suggestion: Change the netmod template and process to accept submissions to Modify or Remove by Net Handle. When you swip the prefix it has a unique nethandle, separate from the parent allocation. This should be sufficient to tell which record should be modified. If you don't want to allow modification or removal of the direct allocation with a Netmod, and if all direct allocation NetHandles end in -01, it should be easy enough to exclude those. This would cut down the number of templates that have to be manually processed. *Response:* We agree the process related to your suggestion can be improved. We plan to make the improvements you suggest in parallel with other SWIP related enhancements. We currently have this work prioritized under the title "SWIP Easy" on our planned functionality page. https://www.arin.net/features/ Thank you for participating in the ARIN Consultation and Suggestion Process. I would like to suggest the term "twoctet". Obviously a mash-up of the words two and octet. Accurately describes the number. It is familiar enough to be recognizable as a networking term. Different enough to be associated in time with IpV6 only. A Google search reveals a surprising lack of hits for the term. *Response:* Thank you for your suggestion, numbered 2014.14 upon confirmed receipt, about the naming of IPv6 address space parts. I think many people have shared your observation over the years, and I am glad you brought it up. ARIN and the other Regional Internet Registries fulfill the role of managing the distribution of IP addresses, but do not make decisions about the protocol specifications and naming. As I am sure you are already aware, the protocols themselves are developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The topic you have brought up in this suggestion has already seen active discussion at the IETF over the years. In fact, there is an Internet Draft on this specific topic. Contact information for the authors can be found inside the draft if you are interested in reaching out to them. http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-denog-v6ops-addresspartnaming-04 Thank you for using the ARIN Suggestion and Consultation Process.
