mike, i think we're arguing past each other at this stage, and if i
were an observer i'd have hit the "delete thread" button by now.  you
are experiencing a very different internet connection paradigm than i
am -- most of the packets under my control are for high volume servers
which are not behind any kind of stateful inspection beyond their own
endpoint networking stack.  this is for performance, simplicity, and
cost reasons.  i have always done it this way.  your mileage clearly
varies.  i think we're done here.
