IPv6 is Becoming a Complex Multi-Dimensional Deployment Space of Islands
1. IPv6 is very complex & continues to evolve. Vendors now have their
"Flavors". That creates one axis of choice from IPv6 Lite to IPv6
"Everything Bagel".
2. Another axis is Address Plans. With 128-bits of Addressing there
dozens of ways to (logical) divide the bits and more choices emerge
each year.
3. A third axis of choice is Native vs. IPv4-assisted (6to4) vs.other
schemes tied to custom Address Plans (#2).
4. A fourth axis of choice is how it is "triggered" via the DNS. Can
legacy A Records be used with Class ? Are AAAA Records Native (Left
Adjusted) ?
Are special triggers hidden in the AAAA Records, such as 2002 ? Will
people go back to A6 Records designed for IPv6 ?
5. A fifth axis of choice is how the DNS servers are deployed. Is IPv4
used to obtain IPv6 records ? Are IPv6-only servers used for Native
IPv6 (#3) ?
6. Yet another axis is where one obtains IPv6 address space. Will it
be 64-bit FREE ? Does it come from upstream ? Is it mapped from IPv4 ?
Is it Native from RIRs?
Given all of the above, ISPs and consumers are expected to select one
from each of the 6 areas above & deploy something that talks to more
than
the island of users selecting that same set ? It appears there could
be several thousand combinations of the above.
Unlike IPv4 which more or less had one deployment scenario with
reducing options as time went on, IPv6 is at the dawn of a big bang
in deployment expansion. Soon, the term IPv6 may cease to have any meaning.
