For an experiment have your edge router log traffic to/from RFC1918 addresses.  I think you will be surprised to see that some *is* being routed over the internet but hopefully being stopped at your global edge.

A quick look at an incoming filter on one of my edges shows:
deny ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any (262873 matches)
deny ip 172.16.0.0 0.0.255.255 any (18474 matches)
deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.255.255 any (127131 matches)

I realize it is not a overpowering amount of traffic but it does exist.
