prefix filtering will be the first refuge for some, the last refuge for many,
as the routing table continues to grow. even if new routers can handle ~2mR
and even if global BGP could ever converge with that many churning routes, we
will always be a community of both people who can afford new routers and
people who cannot. as john curran said, the more or less slow organic growth
of the routing table is something the community knows how to adjust to, but a
sudden step might look an awful lot like collapse to a lot of people.

multihoming using somebody else's address space ("cutouts") is suboptimal in
its path selection and fallback, and doesn't really save a route globally
since most folks will carry it, but it does offer other folks a cheap kill
when they're looking for some way to save memory in their own non-new routers.

the idea that prefix filtering would affect cutouts and subdividers but not
TE is entirely new to me. i thought it was all going to go to hell in the
same handbasket, since distant people wouldn't be able to tell the difference
even if it mattered to them which it won't.

randy, are your "grazing the commons" slides online somewhere, and if so can
you post the URL here? i think a lot of folks weren't in the field last time
you made the rounds with these.
