That doesn't mean abandoning it completely was a good idea. That system
also didn't provide a mechanism for non-leaf ASes to get non-ASN-based
allocations, which severely limited its scalability. We've jumped from one
extreme to the other, when perhaps using both systems in parallel might be
most efficient.
