From info at arin.net Wed Dec 12 16:47:15 2012 From: info at arin.net (ARIN) Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2012 16:47:15 -0500 Subject: [ARIN-Suggestions] New ACSP Suggestion 2012.23 - IPV4 REQUEST RESPONSES Message-ID: <50C8FB63.8020904@arin.net> A new suggestion was received through the ACSP, and was assigned number 2012.23 upon receipt of confirmation. The text of the Suggestion is available at: https://www.arin.net/participate/acsp/suggestions/2012-23.html ARIN will issue an initial response within 10 business days. Regards, Communications and Member Services American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) ___ *Suggestion:* Stop preaching to the choir. While I appreciate the idea behind sending a "You know, we're running out of this, right?" message along to everyone who asks for IPv4, it would be nice if staff were given discretion to skip that under any of the following circumstances: 1. Requestor describes their IPv6 plans in their IPv4 request. 2. Requestor is known to be IPv6-aware. 3. Requesting ORG already has IPv6 resources. For an example of this, see ARIN-2012-12-06-X6566 which meets 2 of the 3 criteria.* * * * -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The suggestion and response text are provided below. This suggestion is now closed and is available at: https://www.arin.net/participate/acsp/suggestions/2012-23.html Regards, Communications and Member Services American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) **** Suggestion: * Stop preaching to the choir. While I appreciate the idea behind sending a "You know, we're running out of this, right?" message along to everyone who asks for IPv4, it would be nice if staff were given discretion to skip that under any of the following circumstances: Requestor describes their IPv6 plans in their IPv4 request. For an example of this, see ARIN-2012-12-06-X6566 which meets 2 of the 3 criteria. *Response:* We understand that it may seem redundant and that we are "preaching to the choir" when we remind all IPv4 requestors that IPv4 depletion is imminent and the need to transition to IPv6 is now. However, as stewards of the Internet number resources in the ARIN region, we see it from a variety of perspectives. While we understand that there are some organizations who are aware of IPv6 and are actively planning their transition, we know of many more who are either unaware of the IPv4 depletion situation or who are aware but are intentionally delaying their transition to IPv6 . It is this audience that we are seeking to educate, and more importantly, to notify well in advance that ARIN will not be able to continue supplying IPv4 addresses to them in the future and if they plan on growing their businesses, they will need to do so using IPv6 address space. We feel that is an extremely important message that we need to continue getting out to the community at every opportunity, and that this is consistent with the mandate set forth by the ARIN Board of Trustees in their 2007 resolution https://www.arin.net/knowledge/about_resources/v6/v6-resolution.html This suggestion is now considered closed. We thank you for participating in the ARIN ACSP. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
