which client are you using?
mine has no support for using the @ in queries and the options/query order
is important. the one you used might have similar constraints.
e.g.
$ whois 4555 @whois.arin.net
Whois Server Version 2.0
Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
