I think the biggest thing that needs said about this entire thread is, yes perhaps there are some frivolous allocations out there (google and facebooks, though, I dont believe fall in this category).  However, we'd still be in the same boat we're in now, where IPv6 is necessary.  It may have happened at a slightly later date if ARIN and the likes had been a little more stingy with their allocations, but we'd still be at the same point in the end.

Ever tried doing route optimization for dozens of dc locations and markets across hundreds of peers?

You don't know what all is behind that and here's a hint it's not all content.
